At the latest since December 2018, when a Twitter user published personal data of more than a thousand politicians and celebrities, cybercrime has been on everybody's lips.

In the modern business world, where the use of technical tools has become indispensable, the risk of becoming a victim of cybercrime is a constant. According to two studies by the German Association for Information Technology, Telecommunications and New Media e.V. (BITKOM) from 2017 every other Internet user in Germany and even more than every other company has been a victim of cybercrime at some point. Medium-sized companies are particularly at risk.

According to the definition of the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA), cybercrime includes crimes that are directed against data networks, information technology systems or their data (cybercrime in the narrower sense) or that are committed using that technology.

The trade with healthcare data is particularly lucrative for attackers, which is why medical practices and other companies in the healthcare sector have recently become an attractive target for hackers.
